Lochside
A popular silent distillery, Lochside was established in 1957 in the Scottish Highlands, closed in 1992, and its buildings and equipment were demolished in 2005. As stocks dwindle, it has become increasingly sought after.
History
Lochside: In 1957, Lochside Distillery was constructed within the former Deuchar's brewery, located in the beautiful Montrose Harbor. The history of this site can be traced back to 1781, but it was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century because it was 'too large for Macdonald's brewery.' Nevertheless, the courageous Joseph Hobbs—owner of Ben Nevis Distillery—firmly supported the reconstruction under the name MacNab Distilleries Ltd (see 'Ben Nevis'). His first goal was to produce grain whisky, but when other larger grain distilleries were built (especially Invergordon in 1959), he followed the approach he had taken at Ben Nevis and installed 4 pot stills in 1961. As at Ben Nevis, Hobbs also experimented with 'pre-blending'—that is, blending grain and malt new make before filling into oak casks. This experiment ceased after his death in 1964, but the distillery continued bottling and blending operations, and Sandy MacNab's blended whisky still had many loyal followers. The new owners soon stopped grain whisky production, but continued producing malt whisky until 1992. The original capacity was 2.5 million proof litres (later reduced by 60%), with substantial exports to Spain. At its peak, the distillery employed 35 workers. In 1992, after Allied Domecq took over D.Y.C. (Destilerías y Crianza del Whiskey S.A.), production was immediately halted. The mature stock was exhausted by 1996, and Lochside Distillery was closed and demolished the following year. The bonded warehouse was demolished in 1999, and the remaining structures in March 2005, after a fire earlier that year had caused partial roof damage. Residential development applications were subsequently submitted.
Curiosities
Ducat purchased the site in 1830. Later, Charles Doig was hired to rebuild the distillery in a 'European' style. Its soaring tower resembles a castle but features a sloping roof. The whisky from here was shipped directly to Newcastle by coastal vessels for sale.
