Mosstowie was an experimental single malt whisky produced at Miltonduff distillery between 1964 and 1981. Using a Lomond still—a hybrid design featuring rectifying plates that allowed for greater control over reflux and distillation—Miltonduff created a spirit distinctly different from their traditional robust, fruity style. The Lomond still produced a lighter, cleaner, and more delicate whisky with subtle floral and grassy notes. This innovative approach was part of a mid-20th century trend where several Scottish distilleries experimented with Lomond stills to diversify their portfolios. Although the experiment was discontinued in 1981 and the Lomond still was converted back to a traditional pot still, Mosstowie remains a fascinating chapter in Scotch whisky history. Today, bottles are exceptionally rare and highly sought after by collectors, offering a unique taste of this innovative period in Speyside distilling.
