Suntory: The Pioneer of Japanese Whisky. The story of Suntory Whisky begins with visionary founder Shinjiro Torii, who dared to dream that Japan could produce world-class whisky without relying on imports. In 1923, Torii established Japan's very first whisky distillery—Yamazaki Distillery—in the misty foothills of Mount Tennozan on the outskirts of Kyoto. This bold venture marked the birth of Japanese whisky as we know it today. As both founder and Suntory's first Master Blender, Torii combined Scottish tradition with Japanese craftsmanship, selecting Yamazaki for its pristine water source and unique climate. This pioneering spirit laid the foundation for what would become one of the world's most celebrated whisky dynasties, earning global acclaim and forever changing the landscape of premium whisky.
