Wakatsuru Shuzo Co., Ltd., founded in 1862 in Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture, is a historic Japanese distillery renowned for its small-batch whisky production. Originally established as a sake brewery, Wakatsuru began distilling whisky in the 1950s, making it one of Japan's pioneering craft whisky producers. The distillery utilizes locally sourced ingredients, including pure underground water from the Tateyama mountain range, to create its signature 'Sunshine Whisky' and limited single malt expressions. After a brief hiatus, Wakatsuru resumed whisky production in 2019, focusing on artisanal, non-chill filtered releases that showcase the unique terroir of the Toyama region and appeal to modern connoisseurs seeking authentic Japanese craft spirits.
