History

Apart from the Abhainn Dearg distillery (their stills are larger), Strathern can be considered Scotland's first micro-distillery. It began production in October 2013, founded after a conversation between Tony Reeman-Clark, David Lang, and David White following the Edinburgh 'Whisky Fringe' event. Like Daftmill, this distillery is built within a 160-year-old stone farm building. The still is a small pot still type, manufactured by the Portuguese company Hoga, originally intended to provide fortified alcohol for the sherry industry. This type of still is now widely used in whiskey production in Europe and North America. The distillery offers a limited number of 50-liter casks for whole cask sales, and also distills its own gin, using neutral spirit as a base, and rectifying it in a spirit still connected to a separate lyne arm and equipped with a botanical filter tray, producing three gins: Heather Rose, Classic, and Oaked Highland (the latter is recommended to be drunk straight).

Curiosities

Strathallen's most distinctive feature is its hands-on 'practical' whisky courses, offered in intimate one-day, three-day, and five-day formats for groups of just two to three people maximum. This ultra-personalized approach allows participants to work directly with the master distiller, learning everything from mash bills and copper pot still operation to cask selection and sensory evaluation. The founder, a pioneer of Scotland's craft distilling movement, also established the Scottish Craft Distilling Association to champion artisanal producers nationwide.
