History

Clydeside Distillery began production in early November 2017 and opened to the public on November 23. As its name suggests, it is located in an old pump house on the banks of the River Clyde. The pump house was built in 1877 to provide hydraulic power for the Queen's Dock near Glasgow city centre. The founder is Tim Morrison. His father, Stanley P. Morrison, began working in the whisky business in the early 1950s and purchased Bowmore Distillery in 1963 (see "Aberargie"). He also owned independent bottler A.D. Rattray. Tim's great-grandfather was the architect responsible for building the Queen's Dock, so the location holds special meaning for the family—Tim's son Andrew was appointed Commercial Director. Glasgow-based architectural firm Hypostyle was commissioned to restore the Grade B listed pump house building and transform it into a complete tourist attraction. They also designed the new distillery's main building: a highly modern rectangular structure, half-clad in glass and half in timber, offering views of the river. The distillery itself was designed by contemporary distillery designer Dr. Jim Swan (see "Aberargie", "Lindores", "Ardnamurchan", etc.). Jim passed away in 2017. Unsurprisingly, due to its location near the Riverside Museum, Glasgow Science Centre and Scottish Exhibition Centre, Clydeside is expected to become a major tourist attraction. The first part of the tour is self-guided, telling the 140-year history of Glasgow as a whisky centre through video, images and text, housed within the renovated pump house building. The second part is a tour around the new distillery, visiting the "four craftsmen of vitality" (according to the distillery website: "In Glasgow, I never doubt the 'vitality' element!"). The final part is a tasting, with optional visits to the distillery's whisky shop and café. The distillery also has facilities for private events such as weddings. The distillery expects to attract 65,000 visitors per year. In addition to tourism, Clydeside will also produce Lowland single malt whisky under the supervision of former Bowmore distillery manager Alistair McDonald.
