Jamie Morrison, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Perth Distilling Company, a man born for the whisky trade. Morrison's father Brian is the boss of Morrison Bowmore Distillers; his uncle Tim recently built Clydeside Distillery in Glasgow (see entry). In 1951, his grandfather Stanley P. Morrison founded the family business, initially as whisky brokers, and later acquired Bowmore Distillery in 1963. In 1994, Jamie Morrison sold Bowmore as well as Auchentoshan and Glengarioch distilleries to Suntory. Aberargie is a small village on the south bank of the River Tay, seven miles from Perthshire, at the northernmost part of the Lowlands, at the entrance to Glenfarg. The Morrison family has been growing barley to malting standard on their farm of over 300 acres for years, with the fertile alluvial land now able to supply their requirements, with malting services provided by the Simpsons family. What makes them unusual or unique is the cultivation of Golden Promise barley—a legendary variety launched in the early 1960s, prized by distilleries and brewers for producing full-bodied, rich spirits. Following a collaboration with Seagram's in London, Jamie and his father acquired a controlling stake in the Scottish Liqueur Centre in Bankfoot, Perthshire. The company was founded by Jamie's former colleague Kenny Mackay, later renamed Morrison & Mackay, and involved in the single cask whisky business (see 'Industry-leading independent bottler'). To achieve rapid expansion, larger warehouses, blending workshops and bottling plants were needed in a short timeframe, and these requirements could be satisfied by buildings near Aberargie Distillery. In June 2016, the distillery began operations, and on November 1, 2017, it was officially opened. Perth Distilling Company is a family business, wholly owned by Jamie Morrison and his parents.
